Session Ten "A Past and Present Future"
The Elder God Dage has tried three times in the past to return to our world. The first of these attempts was over 10 thousand years ago. Legend and Myth is hard to find of this time period but the stories told of the first Tide where dark and nightmarish indeed. Imagine a great hero coming forth and assisting in the defeat of this evil god. The struggle and the victory. The newborn hope given to the world. The hero falls as he defeats the villain thus cementing his name forever in time. That heroes story would pass from generation to generation. The words would pass from words to text and back countless time over the ages.
Now imagine our hero’s, current time; discovering that hero’s story in the Golem Mage Rictus’s journal. It seems, according the Rictus’s research that this man once wore an amulet said to protect its wearer from the Taint. More exciting is the fact that long ago this hero was said to be buried in a town nearby. If the hero’s tomb is still there… and that amulet could be recovered! Wading into an ancient keep full of god knows what to rescue Rictus from a man directly related to this new tide… an amulet of such power could be invaluable.
Time is of the essence and the group decides quickly. The burial town was once called “Night Falls” but has, over time degraded into an agricultural community called Branin Ford. Being the next stop along the road anyway the group decides to take the time to investigate even though they fear the passage of time will surely have left the ancient ruins lost to them.
Imagine their shock when they arrive not in Branin Ford but in “Night Falls” itself. A bustling city where the dead are brought for burial. Here, in this holly place the church and Burial Guild guarantees no dead will rise again.
Walking into the reborn city is like walking into the past. This odd feeling is bolstered by the fact that those in the town seem to beleave that the Tide has been stemmed and the Ancient God Dage has been captured. It takes little research to realize that those native to the town actually beleave they are residence of a time over ten millennium passed. Whats more… our aforementioned hero and his amulet are not only still there but newly intered for less than a week.
There is little time to investigate however when the scene is interrupted by a novice gravedigger running into town in a panic. His story reveals that a spirit has risen in the great Mausoleum… a fact both impossible and dire according to the local elders.
Having need to enter the mausoleum to recover the amulet anyway the party volunteers to investigate the site and the spirit.
What they find is no less than earth shattering.
Early exploration of the Mausoleum are uneventful. It is obvious something has disturbed the area but the place seems otherwise quiet. The only two things encountered are a black-red ooze placed to keep the site clear of rodents and pests and an undead guardian wolf. It seems the defenses here are designed to keep things in… not out.
It is only when the party begins to discover the hero tombs that things become disquieted.
Mortull, having heard that the heroes name was the same as his own; had become unsettled and anxious. No preparation could have braced him for the shock of discovering his own tomb deep within these halls. Not only is it his own face resting quietly within the sarcophagus but the figures armor and the sought after amulet seem to attest that the hero was indeed a great man. How does Mortull become such a man? More confusing… if this is Mortull’s future, why is he buried in the past?
Dark Angels screaming draws him out of his shock, questions still reeling in his head as he numbly rushes to investigate.
Laying in another room is another familiar body, and standing over it is its own spirit, moaning and lashing out in pain and sorrow. Dark Angels face is colorless… ashen and wide eyed. Resting peacefully on the table is Dariet…. and his spirit seems full of wrath. What nightmare place is this!!?
Further up the hall Ooyuki has discovered a sarcophagus of his own. A female Troll named Sakora. The woman wears his native lands armor and appears to be a scout like himself. This is common for his people…. to send multiple scouts. But how did she end up here? Not aware of developments in the other room, Ooyuki still has the beleaf that the woman is a hero of the past. Its only when he finds her personal effects does he realize that something is wrong. The woman, like himself carried and maintained a journal. Pulling it from the hide bag beside her he notes another journal within the bag. Drawing it also from the bag he is shocked to find it is his own… and it is complete. Also in the bag is the pommel of his own sword….. still on his back.
What is this!? What can this mean? Scanning his own journal reveals that he once loved this woman… or so it is written. As best he can tell hes never seen this woman before, but the journal says she is important to him.
Only a single passage in his journal seems to give and clue as to what is going on here.. .a passage in the journals recent past revealing that Ooyuki stood outside the mausoleum and watched his own group enter… a step vital to the completion of his task" Ooyuki has no time to consider or read further when he hears Angels scream.
Further back in the Mausoleum Bloodbourne and Tamora both seek entrance to an area blocked by iron bound wooden doors. Nothing they do seems to open the way, whats more it is apparent that someone outside wants them to remain in here as the main entry doors have been barred from the outside… trapping the group within the mausoleum.
Soon the group realizes Dariets spirit is trapped in this place, anchored to his own body through some dark ritual. The mystery of how he came to be in this place and time is soon overshadowed by thoughts of how to release his tortured soul. Eventually all thoughts turn to the chambers not yet entered. Surely the answers they seek are locked away in a safe place. Soon the entire party is back with Bloodbourn and Tamora and a frantic effort begins to open the wooden doors.
It is soon realized that the amulet Mortull recovered from his own resting place seems to have power when brought near the doors. A few moments later and through daring trial and error Mortull realizes he can pass through the doors as though illusion. But only he and anyone touching him may do so. The rooms on the other side are quiet and unlit. Two great chambers contain the remains of some ancient king and a prince. The third room however contains yet another familiar face. Dian’Dalee. She lay peacefully upon a stone sarcophagus, the wall behind her painted to display her image. She kneels beside a wounded soldier and seems to tend to the man, his eyes are closed and his wounds are grave. The whole thing gives the elven woman a nearly saintlike divinity. The image would be beautiful if not horrifying. The man resting in her arms is none other than Mortull…. from his own past. Many years ago he awoke with tended wounds in a strange place. He had no memory of who tended those wounds or how he had gotten them….. it seems now at least he has one answer.
Around Dian’Dalee’s neck lay a thin silver chain and upon it a ring is held… a ring Bloodbourne and Mortull recognize as the very ring on Dark Angels hand… the ring given to her by Dariet upon his proposal of marriage to her.
It is not known what prompted Bloodbourne to step forward and gingerly remove the ring from the chain but the moment he does Dian’Dalee’s remains begin to wither and shrink into ash.
Eventually the group returns to the tortured spirit of their old friend and return the ring to his cold hand…. the spirit is then released. Everyone then shakily makes their way back toward the entrance to try and find a way to bypass the barred entrance doors.
Bloodbourne decides to escape through a nearby window. The area outside seems different… older than before but he takes little note as he crosses around to the structures entrance to unbar the way for his friends. Once done he opens the door only to find the room beyond in ruins and devoid of his friends. A sinking feeling in his heart urges him on as he rushes back to the window and back inside. There he finds his friends waiting for him to unbar the still closed doors. It now seems clear something is wrong and that their only escape is out that window. Soon all but the troll has escaped through the window. The moment that Mortull climbs through the time gate closes. The party stands at the ancient ruins of a long forgotten mausoleum… below them the abandoned farming town of Branin Ford. The group is in so much chock from the things they have encountered here that it takes them a moment to realize the troll is not with them. A general panic rises when they do and they scurry to recover their friend….. no matter what they do or where they go… there is no sign of their friend.
Is Ooyuki forever trapped in the past? How will the group save their comrade? What is going on around here? So many questions. Will we find any answers in our next session? We will see, next Saturday.
